Supporting Women through
Pregnancy,Birth, and Beyond
The birth of your baby is sacred, precious, and one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Labor support plays a very important role in helping you to have the best birth experience possible. A birth doula is not just a support person during your labor and delivery, but is there for you throughout your pregnancy and after you have your baby, to help guide you and ease your mind about the birth process.
Birth doulas recognize birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life. She understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor. A doula assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth. She stays with the woman throughout the labor and provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions.
Doulas help facilitate communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers. She perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experience and allows the woman's partner to participate at his/her comfort level.
